Abstract
The article explores the Swedish religious and ethical novel «The Letter from the Wilderness» by Goran Tunstrom which is composed as a novel-Gospel and describes Jesus Christ's childhood. The author deviates from the canonic description of Christ's divine nature and focuses on his human essence. The mystical aspect of the novel is overpo- wered by the psychological reflection and the author envisions the «miracle» of simple love to be the purpose of a hu- man. We conclude that the Swedish writer perceives God as something that is not outside of a human, but rather exists within and the search for God is just a way for humans to find themselves. The main challenge that Christ has to over- come is inaction, which in the context of Swedish society can be interpreted as an ethical compromise as Sweden chose the policy of neutrality during World War II.
