Abstract
The article examines the problem of the origin of the princes who ruled in the city of Goroden described in the chronicles. The author cites some arguments according to which the traditional concept of Davyd Igorevich as the ancestor of the Goroden princes is not based on reliable sources, but is widely recognized in the scholarly literature. Based on the analysis of the available data, the author argues that the father of Vsevolodko was Mstislav, a grandson of Igor Yaroslavich, who died in 1116. The article also determines the time and circumstances of the formation of the Goroden principality, which occupied an important strategic position on the western border of the Kievan Rus’. The significance of Grorden was one of the factors that prompted Vladimir Monomakh's efforts to pull the local dynasty into his orbit.
