The aim of the article is to study syntagmatic characteristics of Latin verbs of speech from the functional point of view and to examine the correlation between their semantic specific features and syntactic combinability. The author used methods of database of languages, logical-semantic analysis, analysis of compatibility, quantitative methods. The syntagmatic characteristic of the verbs is determined by two semantic-pragmatic oppositions: the «situation» verbs ( dico, loquor ) / the «label» verbs ( aio, inquam ), the verbs that have non-speech components in semantics ( dico, aio ) / the verbs of only speech direction ( loquor, inquam ). The «label» verb attaches only proposition, the «situation» verb can attach different objects that are not propositions as well as the words that have adverbial semantics. The verbs of speech that have non-speech components in semantics can be used impersonally and can form parenthetical structures.
