This article examines the etymology of the Russian rhetorical/stylistic terms in the dictionaries of literary studies. The aim is to determine the formal and content features of the etymology components of such terms as lexicographical units. While analysing the material, the following approaches were used: the descriptive method, the structural method and the method of semantic analysis. The research revealed some differences concerning formal as well as content features of the etymology in various special dictionaries. The differences in the presentation of the etymology can be explained by structural peculiarities of Russian rhetorical terminology and by the preferences and traditions in the shaping of the Russian rhetorical/ stylistic terms. Some formal and content peculiarities of the etymologies are observed. Various design differences are due to the formal side of etymologies. The content differences arise from different translations of the Greek and Latin equivalents into Russian or their different interpretations. We examine in detail some examples of ambiguous translation and/or interpretation. The results of this research help to clarify the semantic relationship between the Greek and Latin rhetorical/stylistic terms and their Russian equivalents.
