Abstract
The article examines the creation and evolution of the mythological image of the Grand Prince of Kiev Vladimir Monomakh. It is shown that this process was started by the contemporaries of the prince, and he himself played an active role in it. The myth, having been completely established by the middle of the 13th century, has undergone a significant evolution. As a result, by the end of the 15th - early 16th century, Vladimir turned from the terror of the Cumans, guarantor of justice and protector of the oppressed to a symbol of dynasty and an embodiment of autocracy. The myth that was most relevant during the reign of Ivan the Terrible gradually faded away. When Peter the Great put Alexander Nevsky on the pedestal of glory, the myth was finally marginalized and moved to the periphery of public consciousness.
