The article examines the tendencies of parochial communication in the Belorussian-Lithuanian Orthodox dioceses in the late 18th and the first half of the 19th century. The problem of legitimacy during the period of social system modernization in the Russian Empire is identified as one of the key problems of communication. The role of the parish clergy in the search for solutions of this problem is shown. Some peculiarities of the government's approaches to the problem of communication at the level of the parish during the reign of the emperors Paul I, Alexander I and Nicholas I are noted. The author comes to the conclusion that the Orthodox clergy was used effectively for informational support of the social modernization during the period under study.
