The issue of the founding date of Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod became topical in 2016 in connection with the university's centenary. In this article, particular attention is given to the analysis of archival sources and historiography that shed light on the emergence of different versions regarding the date of the university's founding. The author tries to resolve the debate on the university's three «birthdays» and to provide a scientific justification for the most correct (in the author's opinion) date of the university's founding.
