The article aims to research the correlation between the mythological and the historical in Ugo Foscolo's poem «Dei Sepolcri». The poem is linked with graveyard poetry, but the poet contrasts the brevity of human life with the immortality of human memory and human feats. The author compares the ideas of Ugo Foscolo and Vittorio Alfieri and analyzes the interpretation of some mythological characters (Cassandra, Hector and others). The author's research is based on the use of the biographical method, the comparative method and the cultural-historical method. It is concluded that Foscolo's poem was influenced not only by ancient literature, but also by the German literature of the Enlightenment in terms of interpretation of mythological characters and stories. By inserting some historical figures, the poet unlocks the mythological symbol space. The poet reflects both on the fate of a particular person and on the fate of his native land. The death theme contrasts with the idea of immortality of the human spiritual ideals.
