Abstract
The paper examines the motif of way in novels «Phantastes» and «Lilith» by G. MacDonald, one of the first fantasy writers. G. MacDonald uses creatively the elements of folklore and literature tradition in the author's religious-ethic conception of the way of spiritual cognition and development. The paper notes the influence of G. MacDonald’s ideas on fantasy authors of the XX-th century
